This Code of Practice provides practical advice for persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) and other duty holders on managing risks associated with stevedoring. It applies to all workplaces where stevedoring operations are carried out.

This model Code of Practice covers:

  • the loading and unloading of vessel cargo

  • stacking and storing on the wharf, and

  • receival and delivery of cargo within a terminal or facility.

This code should be used in conjunction with the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act and Regulations and other relevant legislation such as Marine Orders

To have legal effect, model Codes need to be approved by jurisdictions.

SWA is not a regulator and cannot advise you about WHS issues in the workplace. If you need help please contact your state or territory work health and safety authority.

In this model Code, the word:

  • ‘should’ indicates a recommended course of action, and

  • ‘may’ means an optional course of action.

The words ‘must’, ‘requires’ or ‘mandatory’ mean that the courses of action are compulsory.

Check with your regulator to find out if this Code of Practice has legal effect in your jurisdiction.
